I share your passion for wicked women, history, and the small details that make history come alive.

I wonder if you have ever heard of the Duc de Chartres? I have long been a student of 18th century France, and though I prefer Marie Antoinette, I did find the story of the particular debauched and ruthless Duc de Chartres to be one of great interest. I posted a blog about him and his fractured alliance that I hope you might enjoy reading. I identify with her quite strongly but feel enchanting is not quite precise. Although she seems to have been witty and attractive, she also seems to have been quite impulsive and a tiny bit too aspirational (greedy).Lizardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14463419634140873936noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7468836798747722663.post-70631556904034343752008-06-29T18:21:00.000-04:002008-06-29T18:21:00.000-04:00Bigamy. In fact, Jean Plaidy/Victoria Holt/Philippa Carr's books were one of the reasons I became such a history geek.Elizabeth Kerri Mahonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07763642809052430107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7468836798747722663.post-27225323217270910442008-06-26T01:14:00.000-04:002008-06-26T01:14:00.000-04:00Hi Elizabeth,I adore your blog. I added your blog as a link to mine a few months ago.

Occasionally on my blog I write historical posts. One of my favorite historical novelists is Jean Plaidy/Victoria Holt. I saw that you mentioned Plaidy in one of your early posts as one of your favorites. I also enjoyed the BBC's Lillie just like you did when I was in late high school or early college.Sinceraehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03697084922540971553noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7468836798747722663.post-60504379509429993102008-06-20T09:33:00.000-04:002008-06-20T09:33:00.000-04:00Elena, Elizabeth Chudleigh is one of those women w...Elena, Elizabeth Chudleigh is one of those women who were incredibly scandalous in her day, and was probably looked at as a cautionary tale for women. It certainly didn't help that her bigamy case occurred at the same time that the War of Independence was raging in the US. She's very lucky that she wasn't branded or deported, two things that could easily have happened to her. If she had been poor, instead of an aristocrat things would have gone terribly wrong for her. It was another instance of how there was one law for the rich and one for the poor.Elizabeth Kerri Mahonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07763642809052430107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7468836798747722663.post-70128876845897795102008-06-19T15:26:00.000-04:002008-06-19T15:26:00.000-04:00Very interesting. There's something so delicious about reading about someone in history that you knew nothing about. I agree that Elizabeth must have had the most enchanting personality, and she managed to survive by her wits in an age when women had few assets other than their beauty and their personalities to make their way in the world.Elizabeth Kerri Mahonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07763642809052430107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7468836798747722663.post-78421928641408402482008-06-18T20:40:00.000-04:002008-06-18T20:40:00.000-04:00I am amazed at the amount of research and writing ...I am amazed at the amount of research and writing that went into this highly fascinating post.
